The storm is forecast for Monday, when forecasters expect cold Arctic air coupled with a precipitation system could produce snow.

“A significant pattern change is expected across much of the country as an Arctic outbreak is expected to spread from the northern plains south and east, resulting in an exceptionally high chance of below-average temperatures across much of the East,” the National said The Weather Service Climate Prediction Center said in a post on “X.”

The Arctic outbreak begins on Wednesday, where the cold will last until the first weekend of January. High temperatures will be between 20 and 30 degrees below Monday’s level by midweek.

“We’re talking about a big, big slowdown, to say the least, particularly for places along the East Coast as we approach the first few weeks of January.” FOX Weather said meteorologist Kendall Smith.

After the first cold snap, two more rounds of Arctic air will descend from Canada, triggering a long-lasting arctic outbreak of freezing temperatures in parts of the United States.

For the north, the change in weather brings the first prerequisite for snow. Any low pressure system that develops and takes advantage of this cold air will likely produce snow.

“The next piece of this complicated puzzle is how stormy it is. Do we have a pattern that allows for the development of multiple storms, possibly winter storms, to the east and including the Mississippi River Valley? And the answer is yes, it looks like we could have a storm,” FOX Weather said meteorologist Stephen Morgan.

The National Weather Service said freezing precipitation was possible in central parts of the country and heavy snow could affect the Northeast.

“Frozen precipitation is possible across portions of the Southern Plains and the Southeast, with the possibility of heavy snow extending northward to include large portions of the Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes and Northeast,” the agency said .
