Power outage in Puerto Rico after power grid collapses, leaving 1.3 million people in the dark | Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, there is a widespread power outage affecting almost the entire island on New Year’s Eve following the collapse of the power grid.

Almost 1.3 million people on the island are without electricity.

Luma Energy, the private energy company that primarily supplies the island’s electricity, reported as of 10:45 a.m. ET that only 13.5% of customers in the U.S. territory had power. In a statement, the company estimated it could take between 24 and 48 hours for power to be restored.

Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi posted on X that his office was in contact with Luma and was demanding “answers and solutions” from the company. Luma said in a statement that it believes “a subway failure” was responsible for the outage.

There was another power outage in June, affecting around 350,000 customers on the island. The New Year’s Eve outage appears to be significantly larger than the previous power outage.

Power outages have been a recurring problem for Puerto Rico since 2017, when Hurricane Maria severely damaged the island. The hurricane crippled the public power grid, known as the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, or Prepa. The following year, the island’s then-governor announced the sale of Prepa and privatized the electricity distribution network.

Due to the 2017 hurricane and subsequent power outages, many people in Puerto Rico rely on backup generators. Puerto Rico’s main airport announced that flights would not be interrupted and operations were running normally thanks to the power generators.

New Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón, who is scheduled to be sworn in on Jan. 2, plans to appoint an “energy czar” to review the contract with Luma and look for another power grid operator, according to the Associated Press.
