PREMATCH REPORT: Oilers at Avalanche

Calvin Pickard made a save from Clayton Keller in the third period after Utah tied the score before the Oilers missed a chance to win on a late power play.

Just 1:18 into overtime, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fought off the puck from Matias Maccelli and secured his low blocker (where else?) on a partial breakaway against left-hander Karel Vejmelka.

“It’s the opposite hand, so I just tried to see the spot and I hit it,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “I think quite a few times this year I missed the ball by a few centimeters, or the goalie stopped it well, or I hit the post or whatever. But of course it’s nice to see them go in every now and then.”

The game-winning goal was Nuge’s third of the season, and in addition to the Oilers’ power play, which he’s a big part of, the goals could come a little more frequently after he was held to 10 points in 23 games this season.

“I thought he had a really good game tonight,” Knoblauch said of Nugent-Hopkins. “I thought he made a lot of good plays and obviously putting the puck in overtime was the most important play. He worked hard to get the ball lost and turn to take advantage of that opportunity. But we talk about it a lot.” Power play tonight and how good it was also had a lot to do with it.

“Nuggy is a clutch player,” Draisaitl added. “He plays really well in close games and for him to get rewarded, we’re probably more happy about that than he is. But an all-round great game from him.”
