Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he will learn more about his players from tomorrow’s Premier League game against Southampton than from recent encouraging performances against Liverpool and Arsenal.

After the draw at Anfield, United knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup despite Diogo Dalot being sent off in the second half at the Emirates Stadium.

There has been a positive atmosphere at Old Trafford after a run of four consecutive defeats over the Christmas period.

However, Amorim is aware that his team cannot counter-attack at home against a Southampton side who have just one league win this season and are eight points behind second-bottom Leicester.

“This next game will teach me more about my players than the last two,” he said.

“There were no expectations in the last two games. Against Arsenal we waited for the opportunity. In the future we can’t play like this anymore and I know that. Fans will expect more tomorrow. We have to deliver.”

Amorim refused to answer a question about the future of Marcus Rashford, who has not played for United since December 12 and has been linked with a move away from the club before the transfer window closes.
