President Biden has commuted the prison sentences of nearly 1,500 people and granted 39 pardons, marking the largest one-day act of clemency in modern history, the White House announced Thursday morning.

Inmates who were in home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and “successfully reintegrated into their families and communities” have had their sentences commuted, the announcement said. The 39 people pardoned were convicted of non-violent crimes, the White House said.

“The president has made more commutations at this point in his presidency than any of his recent predecessors at the same point in their first terms,” White House officials said in a statement.

Biden indicated he plans to issue more pardons and ceremonies before he leaves office.

“I will take further steps in the coming weeks. “My administration will continue to consider clemency petitions to advance equal justice under the law, promote public safety, support rehabilitation and reintegration, and provide meaningful second chances,” Biden said.

Thursday’s pardons come as the president faces bipartisan criticism for pardoning his son Hunter on gun crime and tax charges.

Biden vowed multiple times over several months that he would not intervene on his son’s behalf, only to go back on his word on December 1. While public figures criticized the move, it was also largely unpopular with the American people. A Wednesday poll by the Associated Press found that only two in 10 Americans approved of the pardon.

The first son was convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year. He pleaded guilty to federal tax charges in September and was convicted in June of three weapons offenses after he lied on a mandatory gun purchase form and said he had not used drugs illegally or had a drug addiction.

The President argued in a statement that Hunter was “singled out only because he is my son” and that an attempt was made to “break Hunter” in order to “break me.”

A day after the pardon, reporters questioned White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, asking whether President Biden and his surrogates had lied to the American people. Jean-Pierre replied: “One thing the president believes in is always being honest with the American people,” repeatedly referencing Biden’s own statement on the subject.
