Preview, prediction, what to pay attention to

A look at Sunday’s Week 14 Giants-Saints game at MetLife Stadium:

Marquee matchup

Saints FS Tyrann Mathieu vs. Giants QB Drew Lock

Tyrann Mathieu AP

Mathieu has three interceptions this season and the Honey Badger has 36 picks in 175 games in his 12-year NFL career.

He has a feel for the ball and Lock tends to throw it there.

Lock botched a screen pass for a pick-six against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving and has a brutal record of 28 touchdown passes and 24 interceptions in 32 NFL games.

“There are always advantages and disadvantages to being a gunfighter,” Lock said. “The guy that goes out there and can make every throw, but the negative side of that label is that sometimes you can put the ball at risk. “There’s a balance.”

Paul’s choice

The Saints are not good, but they are preferred away from home. What does that tell you about the state of the Giants?

Derek Carr has lost his top targets, but he’s a proven, decent NFL quarterback.

Can the Giants say that about Drew Lock, the third QB they brought in this season? If you have Alvin Kamara in fantasy football, prepare for a big week of rushing and getting stats.

Four defeats

Mr. reliable: Darius Slayton is a remarkable player and not because he is remarkable as a wide receiver.

It is that he is remarkably consistent in his production.

Slayton has 34 receptions for 477 yards in 11 games. If he maintains this pace over the final five games, he will finish his sixth season with the Giants with 50 receptions for 694 yards.

In four of the last five seasons, Slayton posted 46-50 receptions and 724-770 yards.

“I think I’ve improved every year I’ve been in the NFL,” Slayton said. “I believe that whenever the season ends, I go into the offseason, go to work and come back a better version of myself for seventh grade.”

Depth map deep dive: This often happens during a very bad season – players fall by the wayside.

The Giants will play without three other starters on defense – LB Bobby Okereke, CB Deonte Banks and DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches – and will be without star NT Dexter Lawrence.

And on Saturday, starting CB Cor’Dale Flott (hamstring/knee) was placed on the injury report and listed as questionable.

Both starting offensive tackles, Jermaine Eluemunor (doubtful) and Evan Neal (questionable), are injured, and that’s in addition to Andrew Thomas, who is already on injured reserve.

Get ready to be called up to the practice squad and add new additions Elijah Garcia, Casey Rogers and Cory Durden at defense, and possibly Josh Ezeudu and perhaps Chris Hubbard (questionable with knee issues) at offensive tackle.

Jersey boys: Is there anything in the water around the Meadowlands?

The Giants and Jets are the only NFL teams that do not have a 300-yard passer in a game, and also the only two teams that do not give up 300 yards to an opposing quarterback.

That’s in large part because neither team has been able to stop the run – the Giants are 29th in the NFL, the Jets are 20th – so why pass when you can beat them?

This may come as a surprise: The Giants are the only team in the league that has not yet allowed an opposing receiver to gain at least 100 yards.

Clamp: These last five games would have been a wonderful opportunity for TE Theo Johnson to end his rookie year on a high note.

Unfortunately, he had foot surgery earlier this week and is finished for the season.

This further decimates a thin position group as Daniel Bellinger (fourth-round pick in 2022) has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff and barely plays anymore.

New on the scene is Greg Dulcich, who was waived by the Broncos at the end of November.

Dulcich was a third-round pick in 2022 and had 33 catches for 411 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie. Maybe the long-haired Dulcich will show something on the track.
