Prime Minister Modi mourns Manmohan Singh

India mourns the death of one of its most respected leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, soon after AIIMS-Delhi announced that former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is no more.

“India mourns the loss of one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Coming from a humble background, he developed into a respected economist. He also held various government positions, including Finance Minister, leaving a strong mark “His interventions in Parliament over the years have also been insightful. As our Prime Minister, he has made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

The AIIMS said in a statement that 92-year-old Dr. Singh was being treated for age-related illnesses. Today he lost consciousness at home. “Immediate resuscitation measures were initiated at home. He was rushed to the emergency medical unit at AIIMS at 8:06 p.m. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m.,” the hospital said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences on the death of Dr. Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms under the PV Narasimha Rao government.

“The news of the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is very sad. From the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India to the Finance Minister to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh carried out important tasks in the administration of the country. I extend my condolences to his family and supporters. May God give peace to his soul and strength to his family to bear this loss,” Mr Shah said in a post on X.
