Just weeks before the big day, Prime Video has just added a new holiday action movie for anyone looking to get into the holiday spirit.

Just a month after its theatrical release, “Red One” was made available to stream on Prime Video on December 12th.

Even though critics gave it the cold shoulder and Red One still doesn’t come close to recouping the outrageous $250 million budget it was quoted at the box office, the film could very well have a second life in the streaming world .

A day after its Prime Video debut, “Red One” has secured the top spot in the Prime Video Top 10, ahead of “Secret Level” and “Cross” (at the time of writing). And if you find that you don’t usually agree with the critical consensus about new releases, here’s another reason to put “Red One” on your nice (watch) list: Viewers are apparently loving this new holiday treat.

Looking for a new holiday movie? Here’s more information about Red One, including a selection of what moviegoers and critics had to say about the new flick. Spoiler alert: they did considerably different opinions.

What is “Red One” about?

Red One is a Christmas action comedy that takes us to a militarized vision of the North Pole for a festive rescue adventure.

Shortly before Christmas, Santa Claus (JK Simmons) is kidnapped, and in the film, the North Pole’s head of security (Dwayne Johnson) teams up with Jack, the hacker (Chris Evans), who has passed on Saint Nick’s whereabouts to the villains daring mission to save Christmas.

In addition to The Rock, “Red One” also stars Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Kiernan Shipka, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Nick Kroll, among others.

Should you stream “Red One”?

“Red One” has certainly proven to be a controversial watch; Depending on who you ask or whose opinion you trust, you will likely get a very different answer to the question above.

Opinions vary on the review site Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, “Red One” has a critic score of 30%; On the other hand, the film received a score of 90% on the Popcorn Meter, indicating that most moviegoers really enjoyed it.

Helen O’Hara of Empire, for example, gave the film a 2-star review and wrote: “There’s a bit of heart in the story of two people who have lost faith in Christmas for very different reasons, but more often it’s felt so on.” developed in a laboratory to provide a seasonal spectacle.

Variety writer Owen Gleiberman was a little more brutal, arguing, “I’m not sure a Hollywood film has ever started the season with less genuine Christmas spirit than Red One,” again describing the film as possessing “charming energy.” argue that it is “generic derived.” Ouch.

In general, however, the other viewers couldn’t disagree more. Scroll through viewer reactions on the same website and you’ll see lots of 5-star reviews. Viewers praise the visual effects, calling “Red One” things like “fantastic fun,” “so funny,” and “a must-see at Christmas.”

Call me a humbug if you want, though, but after streaming it myself, I’m inclined to agree with the critics. I wouldn’t recommend watching Red One as I don’t think it will become a Christmas classic any time soon.

It may be flashy and boast an impressive roster of stars, but it’s just kind of an ultra-boring affair, without the magic that keeps other marquee films repeating dates. Honestly, the whole thing plays out like a C-grade superhero movie with a celebratory filter on top.
