Nothing will come easy for Gunner Stockton in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Notre Dame on New Year’s Day.

The third-year student will play center for Georgia as they look to stave off an upset by the Fighting Irish.

Stockton took over at quarterback for the Bulldogs after Carson Beck injured his elbow during the SEC championship game on Dec. 3 and miraculously led them to a 22-19 comeback victory over Texas, punching their ticket to the Playoffs.

But Stockton’s numbers refute the feel-good story.

Essentially, Stockton threw for just 71 yards with one interception and no touchdowns during one half of the game.

On 12 connections through the air, Stockton averaged just 5.9 yards per completion, relying primarily on dump-offs and throws underneath.

That game came against a strong Longhorn pass defense, although his task on Wednesday will likely be just as difficult and his opponent will now enter the game several weeks behind their second-year backup.

Notre Dame was the third-ranked team in college football in yards allowed per attempt (5.6) and yards allowed per game (162.3).

The Fighting Irish held off a potent passing attack in the first round of the College Football Playoff earlier this month.

Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke threw for just 215 yards against Notre Dame after averaging more than 250 yards per game in the regular season.

It’s safe to say Stockton isn’t nearly as talented as Rourke, who finished ninth in Heisman Trophy voting.

The Game: Gunner Stockton throws for fewer than 177.5 yards (-115, Caesars Sportsbook)
