Raiders: Do you think Mark Davis will fire Antonio Pierce?

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis was asked this week to give his thoughts on the status of head coach Antonio Pierce.

Davis said the coach will be evaluated at the end of the season and he clearly doesn’t want to broach the subject since his team is four games into a disappointing season with 2-11 players.

“I’m obviously very disappointed,” Davis told reporters, via The Athletic. “I want to see progress… There are no excuses… You have to get through the season and then we will reassess. At the moment I am not able to assess anything properly.”

Davis said both Pierce and general manager Telesco will be evaluated separately. When asked why, Davis replied: “They didn’t come as a team. They are individuals.” This creates the possibility that one of the positions will change and the other will not.

The plan for the 2024 offseason was to hire a general manager and then a coach (to replace the fired Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler), which is the normal approach around the league. Nonetheless, Pierce was promoted from interim head coach to full-time head coach prior to Telesco’s hiring.

Davis praised the job Telesco has done, pointed to the draft class and said he did a good job. As for Pierce, Davis said it was positive that the team was competitive and played hard.

Still, his comments about the coach and the GM seemed to have different tones. While Pierce might be safe, Davis’ comments made it pretty clear that he’s not entirely sure he’ll return in 2025.

Davis said Telesco’s opinion on the new rookie quarterbacks is important, he said
