Ram CEO leaves the door open for HEMI® comeback in the Ram 1500

In a move that could excite longtime fans, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis has hinted at the possibility of a comeback of the HEMI® V8 engine in the Ram 1500 lineup. Speaking to Motor1, Kuniskis clarified that the return of the HEMI would not be immediate due to technical and logistical challenges.

Popular for its performance and robust reliability, the 5.7-liter 345 cubic-inch HEMI V8 was officially discontinued in the Ram 1500 for the 2025 model year, replaced by the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged HURRICANE I6. This decision was not without controversy, as Ram sales fell 16% year-to-date compared to 2023, reflecting dissatisfaction among buyers and enthusiasts.

According to Kuniskis, the biggest obstacle lies in the Ram 1500’s updated Atlantis electrical architecture, which is currently incompatible with the 5.7-liter HEMI. In addition, suppliers have stopped producing the eTorque version of the engine, a mild-hybrid system that combines the V8 with a 48-volt battery to improve efficiency. Resuming production would require reactivating supplier lines and redesigning components to fit the truck’s new electric platform.

“Even if you say let’s do it, we can’t do it right away,” Kuniskis explained. However, he didn’t rule it out completely, saying: “I didn’t say you can’t do it… you can’t do it right away.”

For now, Ram enthusiasts looking for HEMI performance will have to turn to the heavy-duty lineup, where the 6.4-liter “BGE” or “Big Gas Engine” HEMI engine remains available. Despite the shift in the Ram 1500’s engine lineup, Kuniskis’ comments leave the door open for a possible return of the V8 that helped define Ram’s identity.

Regardless of whether this move comes to fruition or not, it’s clear that Ram is listening to its customers. The possible reintroduction of the HEMI could be a significant moment for the brand as it balances tradition and innovation in the face of changing market demands.
