Ramon Rodrigez Teases Season 3 (Exclusive)

The long wait is almost over: Will Trent Season 3 will finally premiere on Tuesday, January 7th and the episode will answer some of our most burning questions after that jaw-dropping cliffhanger… at least we hope so!

To get an idea of what’s to come in the third part of the series, TV Insider spoke to the lead actor and co-executive producer Ramon Rodriguez.

“Season 3 begins where we were at the end of Season 2. All we know is that he disappeared. We don’t know where he went. We don’t know what he did. And we find out that he went to rural Tennessee with him and Betty and kind of tried to start over,” Rodriguez teased. “We immediately notice that it’s been a while. He doesn’t look the same anymore, he’s not wearing a suit, he’s not clean-shaven… and so he takes some time to think, to get away and start over and, I think, really ask questions about whether his life, that He was prosecuted in the GBI right, and is that what he wants to do? So it was a lot of self-reflection. He had to take that walk.”

In fact, the new season trailer shows Will walking around in much more casual clothing than we’re used to seeing him — until Amanda Wagner (Sonja son) comes in and tells him to go back to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations where he belongs.

“It’s only when Amanda comes back and tells him about this case involving someone from Will’s past that he lures him back in. He’s reluctantly going back,” Rodriguez explained. “Everything he left behind, his relationship with Faith (Iantha Richardson) is really in a terrible state because he didn’t tell her. We see that he and Angie (Erika Christensen) aren’t even (talking). She is no longer APD. And we see the moment when he goes home for the first time, and he walks into his house, and Nico is upset with him, and we see that dinner table, which represented everything that concerned his possible future with Angie, and that is no longer the case. So we kind of pick him up after his decision to leave and explore a lot of those relationships over the course of the season and how they might get it back.”

His relationship with Angie, who was not only his main love interest on the series but also his oldest friend, is particularly strained by his decision to report her to the police for covering up for Crystal’s murder of her abuser.

“It’s really, really hard in the first few episodes, and when Will and Angie finally come face to face, it’s not an easy thing. “They both have their reasons for being upset with each other and Will has his reasons for why he did what he did and so it’s really complicated and hopefully the audience will be happy,” Rodriguez said.

However, according to Rodriguez, what makes the third season unique is not just the processing of the existing dramas. In fact, it’s the newcomers to the squadron who really promise variety to the crew.

“We brought in Gina Rodriguez, Marian Alba, ADA, Assistant District Attorney. We have new love interests. …We also introduced a great character of Raphael, who is also someone from Will’s past who Will has been somewhat indebted to since childhood…Raphael is involved in criminal activity and the leader of a gang is investigating Will. And so it gets really complicated and very personal,” he teased.

“Whereas last season we felt like Will was really being haunted and exploring things from his past and his childhood, I think this season is more about where he is now and what’s happening. “And we also have some pretty intense events that really impact Will — and potentially forever,” Rodriguez continued.

Of course, he also knows that the main attraction is finding out how Will Trent’s devastating decision to break up with the love of his life will affect everyone in his inner circle: “I think for the audience that was watching, will it be like this? I’m really curious to see what happens to Will: how does he get back? Where was he? How has he changed? And what does his possible future look like with or without Angie? What does that look like?”
