Rams clinch 2024 NFC West title

They had to mind their own business and some help from other teams, but the Rams became NFC West division champions on Sunday via the Strength of Victory tiebreaker over the Seahawks.

To win the division in Week 17, the Rams needed a win over the Cardinals on Saturday night, as well as at least four wins from the Bengals, Bills, Browns, Vikings, Commanders and 49ers to win the Strength of Victory tiebreaker against the Seahawks . The Bengals beat the Broncos in overtime on Saturday, leading to the Rams-Cardinals. On Sunday, the Bills defeated the Jets, the Vikings defeated the Packers and the Commanders defeated the Falcons in overtime on Sunday Night Football.

Rams head coach Sean McVay admitted in a video conference with reporters Sunday morning that he would still be watching the games to keep an eye on the results, but that his main focus would be on preparing for next week’s regular season finale against the Seahawks concentrate.

“I’ll have them on,” McVay said. “I’ll definitely keep an eye on them, but I think for us…we’ll clean this movie up. We’ll talk to the coaches and then start putting our plans together on what’s the best way to go.” We’re approaching our Seattle preparation like any other week, with a focus on the games. Maybe a little more attentive, but I would normally do that anyway if we had played a little earlier.

When asked how happy the team would be if it got the win today, McVay said he wouldn’t, considering it structured its week of preparation to face the Seahawks next Saturday and the day off for the player is therefore scheduled for tomorrow instead of Tuesday, but “that would be a positive problem.”

“Maybe I’ll call the guys, tell them congratulations, then we’ll have a Zoom team meeting,” McVay said with a smile. “I don’t know it. It’s strange. If we could do this, you would like to be able to do this together. However we do it, I certainly won’t complain. Let’s hope that’s an answer I have for you the next time we meet.

This performance is remarkable considering the Rams started the season with a 1-4 record, then won 9 of their last 11 games – including five straight to start Week 18 – and put themselves in a good position to win the division title.

“I don’t want to get too into hypotheticals, but being here at 1-4 and where we are right now, I’m definitely proud of this group,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said after the game. “We still have a lot more football to play and a lot more to earn, but we have earned the chance to be where we are. And whatever that is, that’s at the end of the weekend. But I’m proud of this group.” And the way they fought back, many doubted us, many wrote us off with 1-4, and now I can sit here with our record. I’m proud of this group.”
