Rams QB Matthew Stafford poses a “challenge” for the 49ers, according to John Lynch – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The 49ers are 8-3 in games against Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, the 16-year NFL veteran is a proven Super Bowl champion and remains difficult to stop for even the best defenses.

49ers President of Football Operations and General Manager John Lynch is tired of Stafford’s talents entering San Francisco’s Week 15 Thursday Night Football game against Los Angeles. On the latest episode of NBC Sports Bay Area’s “49ers Game Plan,” Lynch explained to Greg Papa what makes Stafford’s play difficult to stop.

“Pressure in his face — and that’s not always enough for a guy like him,” Lynch told Stafford’s dad. “Above all, the robustness. Everyone talks about talent and arm angles, but this guy is a tough guy. He can get hit and knocked down, but he just keeps coming.

“You know you have to play four quarters against a team led by Matthew Stafford. I think the other thing is what I was talking about – the arm angles, no-look passes; It’s really brave what he’s doing, it blows my mind. He did it in the Super Bowl when he looked over here and threw it over the middle of the field.”

Lynch knows that Stafford demands the best from opposing defenses, but he also admires that the quarterback never goes down without a fight.

In 219 career games, Stafford has thrown for 59,350 yards and 376 touchdowns with 187 interceptions. Against the 49ers, Stafford threw for 2,958 yards and 17 scores with nine picks.

Stafford helped the Rams to a 27-24 comeback win over the 49ers at SoFi Stadium in Week 3 and will look to do the same under the lights at Levi’s Stadium. Lynch understands, as he said, that Los Angeles goes the way Stafford takes it.

“He’s got an offense, his familiarity, he really fits Sean McVay as a playmaker,” Lynch told Papa. “He has great receivers (and) skilled players. It’s always a huge challenge to play against a team led by Matthew Stafford.”

Stafford has kept the Rams competitive during his four years in Hollywood. Wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are also helpful hands.

The Rams are no secret to the 49ers. Still, San Francisco will have its hands full against Stafford and his ever-challenging opponent.
