Ravens DT Michael Pierce didn’t want to become a meme after the game-winning interception

The outcome of Saturday’s game between the Ravens and Browns was clear as the most memorable play of the day took place.

After the Ravens took a 35-10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Browns drove the ball into Baltimore territory for a score that would have only changed the players’ fate. Thanks to Ravens defensive tackle Michael Pierce, they didn’t make it.

The 355-pounder made a rare foray into pass coverage and Browns quarterback Bailey Zappe threw a pass right to him at the Ravens’ 16-yard line. Pierce started running as if he was going for his first career touchdown, but he dashed that hope by accidentally giving up after a few yards.

“There’s a long tradition of turning interceptions, fumbles and all that stuff into memes from big people, so at the risk of ruining a career like that for myself, It’s time to go homePierce said in the locker room after the game. “The bus ran out of gas.”

Pierce was asked what was going through his mind as the ball came toward him.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t want to swear on TV, but ‘Oh, damn!’ “Oh my God, he really threw that football,” Pierce said. “I have pretty good hands, I’m glad I caught it. And as I said, the coach preaches smart football. Like I said, I don’t want to end up on a meme or Instagram where my wife and everyone else laughs at me. We did the right thing, we stood up and made sure it continued.”

Pierce’s play drew loud cheers from the Baltimore sidelines and stands. The Ravens will look to do more of the same when they host a playoff game next weekend.
