The Baltimore Ravens have waived wide receiver Diontae Johnson – who was acquired from the Carolina Panthers before the trade deadline, saw limited playing time, caught one pass for six yards in four games, refused to play in his team’s home game against the Philadelphia Eagles and then was suspended for last Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

We waived WR Diontae Johnson. We have activated DB Desmond King and WR Anthony Miller from the practice squad for tomorrow’s game.

Johnson caught 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven games with Carolina. At the time, the Ravens’ deal seemed like a bargain considering he was more or less acquired for a Day 3 pick swap. Theoretically, the Ravens could have used him as a third wide receiver alongside Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.

According to Pro Football Reference, Johnson played just 39 snaps in four games and never played more than 17. That performance came on November 3 in a 41-10 win over the Denver Broncos, and Johnson finished without a score.

Four weeks later, Johnson refused to attend his team’s 19-24 home loss to the Eagles, in which Bateman suffered a knee injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the competition.

That didn’t sit well with the Ravens, who suspended Johnson for last Sunday’s 35-14 win over the Giants. Now he’s completely out of the team, leaving Baltimore even more undermanned at receiver.

Nelson Agholor is out with a concussion. It is questionable whether Bateman has a foot injury and did not train on Thursday.

Flowers should remain the WR1. Tylan Wallace and Devontez Walker are the next men at the position, with Anthony Miller also now on the active roster after being called up to the practice squad.

The 9-5 Ravens have a big home game against the 10-4 Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

A win will secure them a spot in the playoffs and tie them with Pittsburgh in the AFC North race. A Ravens loss secures the division for Pittsburgh, even though the Ravens would still be the heavy favorites for the postseason.
