The Reds fell behind through a seventh-minute goal from Jordan Ayew as Leicester took their first chance of the game to take the lead away from home.

But Alexis Mac Allister set up goals for Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones to give the Reds the lead and ensure the home fans, who braved the elements, had a lovely Boxing Day on Merseyside.

There was a goal overturned along the way that kept Leicester within shouting distance, but Liverpool controlled the ball and were well-placed to win.

Reaction from Arne Slot – What did Liverpool coach say after the Reds extended their league lead with a foggy win at Anfield?

About the performance: “Overall quite satisfied. We played the way we wanted to throughout the game. The only thing we didn’t want was to be 1-0 behind after 10 minutes. But we started well. The first time they threatened us it was a goal straight away. Sloppy defense though. So it was a difficult question.”

Significance of Gakpo’s equalizer late in the first half: “During the first 45 minutes we were close to their 18-yard box many times. The goal just before half-time really gave us a boost.”

Among Jones and Gakpo’s goals: “Our wingers were in 1-on-1 situations and these players have the quality to dominate and finish in these situations. Curtis Jones comes into the box, something he had to do a little more to do in the first half. As a midfielder at Liverpool you have to score goals.”

On their impressive lead in the table: “We look at the table. It would be strange (not to do it). But we also know how difficult this league is, because two months ago we were one point behind City. What this league can do for you with injuries and suspensions – we have to keep track. West Ham are away on Sunday, another challenging opponent.”

On his first time running games around Christmas: “It doesn’t feel Christmassy at all. You could say it was September or November and I would believe it. Normally you would be on vacation. But there are a lot of people at home watching and they like it, like I liked it before.”

Reaction from Mohamed Salah – To the victory and the Premier League

To win: “It’s a good result. To be fair, they had a very difficult first half and the second half according to the way they prepared before the game. The way they stood in front of the box was quite difficult for us. We managed to score three goals, a great result.”

On his 100th PL home goal (98 for Liverpool)l: “Something I’m very proud of. We continue to work hard and hope that I can progress a little further. The most important thing is that the team wins. Hopefully we win the Premier League and I will have a big impact on that.”

On the table lead of seven points: “It’s great, great, but we just have to focus on every game and keep it up. ….The most important thing is to stay humble. This one is very special. Hopefully we win the Premier League for this club, I’ve dreamed of that. I really want to win the club.”
