Reaction from Ruben Amorim – Manchester United coach on Bruno Fernandes, Red Devils defeat, Marcus Rashford omission

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim saw his side find another way to lose by giving relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers a Boxing Day win at Molineux on Thursday.

The Red Devils failed to score and spent most of the second half with one man after captain Bruno Fernandes received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 47th minute.

Matheus Cunha scored 12 minutes later after an Olimpico goal when Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana was caught between two Wolves attackers and failed to keep out a corner. Hee-chan Hwang scored an assist from Cunha in stoppage time to secure three points for Wolves.

This means United have lost five of their last seven games in all competitions and have picked up just three points from their last 15 available games in the Premier League.

Was that a step backwards? “Of course. If we don’t win it will be a step backwards, but the sending off was really hard. Against Tottenham the goal was similar. We even tried with one man less, we were closer to the second than Wolves. It works for us further.”

Standard concession: “Yes (the same goal) against Tottenham. Onana can’t get to the ball. I think he can’t play the ball, so he tries to reach the ball and some players don’t even pay attention. But I don’t want to concentrate on that – the good thing is that we were close to the goal even with ten men.”

About Bruno’s red: “It’s so hard to win a game in the Premier League with eleven men. With 10 men it’s even more.”

On United’s attacking play: “We need to improve relations, but in some moments we lack aggressiveness. But we don’t train. We just play and try to find a better way to win. The others we lost, we had control and we didn’t always dominate, but some things, the set pieces, the sending off.”

Definitely not Marcus Rashford again: “It’s always the same reason. We have to be the same professionals whether we win or lose. If I lose, I have to be stronger. I will continue to pursue my idea to the end.”

On whether Rashford has shown more since leaving: “If he’s not here, you can decide.”
