Real Madrid secured their place in the Copa del Rey round of 16 with a convincing 5-0 win over fourth division club Deportiva Minera on Monday, with striker Arda Güler scoring a superb brace.

Madrid took an early lead when Federico Valverde scored an impressive volley within five minutes. Eduardo Camavinga doubled the lead just eight minutes later with a ball header, while Güler scored the third goal just half an hour ago.

“I’m happy to be able to contribute goals to the team, but my job is different: to help, defend and help out as best as I can,” said Valverde after the game. “I’m glad that the coach takes me into consideration in every game, that he trusts me and even when I’m tired, I’m always happy.”

The hosts came closest to a goal when striker Omar Perdomo fired a long-range shot that flew just past Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin’s right post.

Luka Modric’s great finish into the right corner after a clever combination with Brahim Díaz created a celebratory atmosphere in the Cartagonova stadium despite the home team’s deficit.

“(Luka) is a gift for football and even more so for those who can enjoy it up close,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “The fans, the players, the coach… for me it is a great gift. The way he prepares for a game like this as if it were a final. This is a very important example for our youth.”

“The atmosphere was really good for the players. They stayed with the fans to sign jerseys and that made it a fantastic game.”

Güler secured the victory two minutes before the end with his second goal of the evening.

Despite conceding five goals, Minera goalkeeper Fran Martinez saved several good shots, including shots from Valverde and Kylian Mbappe.

Cartagena’s Deportiva Minera is currently at the top of Group 13 of the Segunda Federacion. Madrid leads LaLiga with 43 points, two ahead of Atlético Madrid.
