Real Madrid – Sevilla 4-2: The hosts are one point behind leaders Atlético

Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde scored spectacular long-range shots in Real Madrid’s win over Sevilla to keep the pressure on La Liga leaders Atlético Madrid.

First-half goals from Mbappé, Valverde and Rodrygo put Los Blancos under control before Brahim Diaz completed a great team move shortly after the break to put the score beyond the visitors.

Sevilla captain Jesus Navas, 39, was substituted for the final time of his career, bringing an emotional end to his 20-year association with the club. He is retiring mid-season due to a chronic hip injury.

Madrid took the lead in the 10th minute through Mbappe, who beat Alvaro Fernandez with a shot from 25 meters at the end of a quick counterattack.

Ten minutes later, Valverde doubled the lead with his own impressive strike from 30 meters from a Madrid corner.

Rodrygo fended off a Lucas Vazquez putback in the 34th minute to underline Madrid’s dominance, although Sevilla immediately equalized when Isaac Romero headed in Juanlu Sanchez’s cross from close range.

Mbappe was the provider eight minutes after the restart when he pushed Brahim behind the visitors’ defense for a finish over the goalkeeper before the Bernabeu stood to applaud Navas and applauded onto the pitch.

The Spaniard – the only player in history to win the World Cup, European Championship and UEFA Nations League – made his 705th appearance for Sevilla, 20 years to the day since he first played at the Bernabeu.

Navas, who also played for Manchester City, provided an assist almost immediately, but Isaac’s low shot bounced off the base of the post.

Dodi Lukebakio beat Thibaut Courtois at his near post and scored another goal for Sevilla five minutes from time.

A 19th win in their last 20 home games against Sevilla helped Madrid push Barcelona into second place, two points ahead of their arch-rivals with a game to play – and one point behind neighbors Atlético.

Barcelona suffered a 2-1 defeat to Atletico in the 96th minute on Saturday and have won just two of their eight league games since beating Real Madrid 4-0 in October.
