Real Madrid played one of the most confusing football games in recent La Liga history on Friday night, missing a penalty and being sent off by Vinicius Jr. but coming back from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Valencia.

After 85 minutes it looked like Los Blancos had lost, but late goals from Luka Modric and Jude Bellingham ensured they eked out a 2-1 win.

The home team were braver in the first half, forcing Thibaut Courtois to make some neat saves in the early stages. The Madrid goalkeeper did little to prevent the opener, however, as his instinctive save fell into the path of Hugo Duro, who couldn’t miss from less than five meters away. For their part, Los Blancos equalized in a matter of seconds, but were well parried by the active Stole Dimitrievski, who made three clean saves in the first half.

They had a clear chance to equalize after 53 minutes when Kylian Mbappe was knocked over in the penalty area – but Jude Bellingham’s penalty hit the post. Further disappointment followed when Mbappe fired the ball into the net only to see it waved off for offside. Vinicius Jr. appeared to have ruined the evening after being drawn into a silly push from Dimitrievski, earning himself a soft but fair red card.

But Madrid stayed alive, Luka Modric equalizing from the bench six minutes from the end of normal time. And soon after, they somehow found a winner: Bellingham caught a terrible back pass before calmly finishing into the bottom corner and pulling off the most unlikely of twists.
