Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham: “Owed” team winner after missed penalty

Jude Bellingham said he “owes” his Real Madrid team-mates for the winning goal after missing a penalty in Friday’s 2-1 comeback win over Valencia in LaLiga.

Hugo Duro gave the home side the lead at Mestalla before Bellingham failed to convert a second-half penalty and hit the post.

Madrid suffered another setback when Vinícius Júnior was sent off for a tackle on Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, but responded when Bellingham set up Luka Modric to equalize before scoring the winner himself after a defensive error in the 95th minute.

The win puts Real Madrid at the top of the LaLiga table, two points ahead of rivals Atlético Madrid and five points ahead of Barcelona.

“A crazy, crazy game,” Bellingham told Real Madrid TV afterwards. “To be honest, I have the team to thank for this goal. It’s so difficult when the team works so hard, you have a penalty, you miss, I felt like I was letting the team down at that moment. I had to focus on it again. “These things happen in a game, penalties, red cards, it can happen. My teammates were great, they told me to keep going and I did.

Bellingham was the key player in Madrid’s second-half comeback. Four minutes after he missed the penalty, he also played in Kylian Mbappé for a goal that was disallowed for a narrow offside.

“It’s a team effort,” Bellingham said. “It’s the team that does everything. Kylian’s pressure for the (winning) goal comes to me and I just have to convert it. That’s the character you have to show. This is the Real Madrid we want to see.” .. When this badge is on your shirt, you don’t give up.”

Madrid next face Deportiva Minera in the third round of the Copa del Rey on Monday before flying to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Spanish Supercopa.
