‘Red One’ sets Prime Video streaming date

“Red One,” the new holiday-themed action comedy from Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, is coming to Prime Video just in time for Christmas.

“Red One” is still showing in cinemas, but will be available on the streaming platform from December 12th. Directed by Jake Kasdan (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”), the film stars Johnson as the head of security at the North Pole and Evans as a notorious hacker and bounty hunter. When Santa Claus (played by JK Simmons) is kidnapped, the two must “team up in a globe-spanning, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” according to the film’s synopsis.

“Red One” also stars Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll and Wesley Kimmel. The Amazon MGM film has grossed $164 million at the global box office to date after originally being planned as a streaming-only release.

The film received mostly negative reviews diversityOwen Gleiberman writes that the film gives Christmas a “backstory that it didn’t need.” It is “at the same time an action film; a kidnapping and rescue thriller in which toy store pantry doors are mystical portals; and an exercise in Christmas world-building, so to speak that is “what was missing from Christmas,” he wrote.

However, those who saw it in theaters seemed to enjoy the film as it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcorn Meter and received an A-Cinema rating. With many families looking for new festive films to watch over the holidays, the arrival of Red One on Prime Video could give the film a huge streaming boost.

“Red One” was produced by Hiram Garcia, Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions; Chris Morgan Productions’ Chris Morgan; Kasdan for the Detective Agency and Melvin Mar.
