The Atlanta Falcons made an intriguing decision this offseason: They gave Kirk Cousins a four-year, $180 million contract with $90 million guaranteed at signing before adding another quarterback in Michael Penix Jr Top ten picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. This move was met with an extraordinary amount of criticism from fans and the media, and for good reason, as the move was questionable at best. However, things have now changed: the Penix Jr. pick appears to be the better of the two players, while the Cousins signing initially looked better.

Early Saturday morning, a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter emerged with the news that Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons are expected to part ways sometime by March 17, 2025, when his $10 million roster bonus is due. This came after Cousins was officially subbed in for Penix Jr. during the week in place of a string of poor performances from the veteran signal-caller, and despite some good shuffling, the Falcons opted to go with the rookie instead.

The Falcons were on a four-game losing streak heading into Week 15, in which they managed to edge past the weak Las Vegas Raiders by a score of 15-9, with Cousins only rushing for 112 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 Thrown interception. The offense stalled and that was ultimately the turning point for the Falcons front office as they will now move on to another option.
