Report: Detroit Lions bring back QB Teddy Bridgewater

According to a report from NFL Network, the Detroit Lions are re-signing quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. At this point, it’s unclear whether Bridgewater will sign to the team’s 53-man roster or practice squad – they currently have two open spots on the active roster and one on the practice squad.

Last year, Bridgewater served as the team’s primary backup quarterback, but at the end of the season, the veteran quarterback decided to retire to coach youth football. Bridgewater eventually coached his old high school – Miami Northwestern – to the Class 3A state championships, where they went 41-0.

While Bridgewater barely played in his only season in Detroit, coach Dan Campbell widely praised him for the influence he had on the locker room throughout the season.

“Teddy was incredible,” Campbell said back in December 2023. “I can go all this way now.” For a lot of people here, Teddy was incredible. He’s a great asset to us, aside from the obvious fact that when we need him, he’s a guy who can win for us. But man, he does so many things behind the scenes that I think a lot of people don’t even realize. He is a valuable addition to our team.”

In particular, Campbell praised Bridgewater for helping receiver Jameson Williams mature and was an asset to quarterback Hendon Hooker, the team’s third-round pick in 2023.

Now that the Lions are headed to the playoffs, Bridgewater will continue to provide strong leadership in the locker room, plus he can be a veteran backup option should something happen to Jared Goff.
