Report: Jim Mora and UConn agree to a new contract through the 2028 season and a raise

Jim Mora and UConn have agreed to a new contract for the Huskies’ head coach. The report came early Saturday from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

UConn is also reportedly paying its coach more. Mora’s new contract calls for him to coach at UConn through the 2028 season and includes a salary increase to $2.5 million annually over the life of the contract.

Mora led the Huskies to an 8-4 record during the regular season. The news comes just before the Huskies took the field in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl vs. North Carolina. Heading into Saturday’s matchup, Mora holds an overall record of 17-20 as a head coach at UConn in three seasons at the position.

Mora’s offense has been instrumental to their success this season. With a three-man backfield feature Cam Edwards, Durell Robinson And Mel BrownIn total, the trio has 2,064 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns this season.

Taking over the program during the 2022 season, Mora’s impact was immediate. The Huskies finished 2021 at 1-11 overall, but in his first season at the helm, he led his program to a 6-7 record with an appearance in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. This season has been dubbed the “Husky Revolution” because there hasn’t been a bowl game on the schedule since 2015.

A disappointing 3-9 season followed in 2023, but Mora turned the Huskies’ fortunes around in 2024 after winning eight games in the regular season. That’s the most for a UConn team in a single season since 2010.

Despite a bumpy road last season, AD David Benedict’s words about Mora’s attitude are right.

“Jim is a proven winner, a man of integrity, and he has the experience and energy to return our football program to success,” Benedict said. “Jim is excited and undaunted by this challenge, and we both know this program has great potential. I am confident that under Coach Mora’s leadership, UConn football will once again fulfill this potential.”

A win over the Tar Heels on Saturday would mark the first nine-win season in program history since 2007. They have never won 10 games at the Division I level, something Mora and Co. want to accomplish in the coming years.

Kickoff between the Huskies and Tar Heels is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET live from Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.
