Report: The Carolina Panthers are expected to stick with Bryce Young rather than their 2025 draft QB

The Carolina Panthers are not expected to draft a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but instead continue to invest in QB Bryce Young. On Sunday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided more details about the organization’s decision.

“They were 0-2, Bryce Young was benched. The Carolina Panthers did it, and I think everyone in the world assumed, “This is over.” Not over,” Rapoport said. “In fact, now that he’s back in the starting lineup and going 2-2, I think he’s really done a lot to show this Panthers organization why they took him No. 1 overall.”

“He gets in and out of the group better. He can diagnose defenses better. And quite simply: He will play better in the future. As far as I know, the Carolina Panthers are not expected to sign a quarterback early next year. If Bryce Young (continues to) make the progress he has been making, it appears he has earned the chance to be a starter for them next year.”

After a lackluster debut season in 2023, Young experienced a decline early this season. Through the first two games, Young completed just 31 of his 56 pass attempts for 245 yards and zero touchdowns while throwing three interceptions.

The Panthers lost both games by a total of 60 points and used Young as an experienced quarterback Andy Dalton. However, after Dalton sprained his thumb, Young returned to the starting lineup in Week 8.

He didn’t miss the opportunity, completing 24 of 37 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns compared to two interceptions. Although the Panthers lost 28-14 to the Broncos, Young’s performance gave the organization a hint of hope for the future.

Young continued his performance with back-to-back wins before a narrow 30-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. In the loss, Young rushed for a season-high 263 yards and a score without throwing an interception.

Head coach of the Panthers on Wednesday Dave Canales discussed how he plans to reward Young for his recent progress.

“Exactly the progress we’re looking for, if he continues to earn these moments, then he’ll be in there,” Canales said. “And the thing I’m most excited about is the weekly growth that’s happening. And we do it like that for just a week. I know that was my language, but he really takes responsibility for it and pushes us to do it.

“So the bottom line is he gives us a chance to win.”
