Another Brooklyn Nets player could have been sent to the Warriors as part of their trade for veteran guard Dennis Schröder, but that likely would have come at a risky cost.

To acquire both Schröder and forward Cam Johnson, Golden State would “almost certainly” have had to trade former lottery pick Jonathan Kuminga to Brooklyn, NBA insider Marc Stein and Jake Fischer they reported in their latest column on Sunday.

The Nets expressed interest in Schröder, Johnson and forward Dorian Finney-Smith and opened “exploratory discussions” with interested teams, which included the Warriors, who expressed interest in all three players, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported last week.

However, it appears Golden State wasn’t ready to put an end to the Kuminga experiment just yet, as the 22-year-old is still trying to cement a clear role on the team in year four.

Kuminga has provided insight into his NBA potential and his ability to become Golden State’s second-leading scorer alongside superstar Steph Curry – a role the team has been longing for all season after franchise icon Klay Thompson moved in left during the last break of the season.

Even if Kuminga hasn’t stayed true to that role, the Warriors appear to be maintaining their patience in the hope that he eventually does.

“It makes more sense for Golden State to give itself more time before making such an effort to see A) how Kuminga continues to handle a role the Warriors have gradually expanded and B) whether Kuminga is fit for later ones Trade talks lifted.” “may help them find a bona fide All-Star sidekick for Stephen Curry after the Warriors unsuccessfully traded Paul George and Lauri Markkanen in the offseason,” Stein and Fischer wrote.

For now, the Warriors are hoping that the acquisition of Schröder – in addition to the continued growth of Kuminga – will solve an existing problem.
