Reports: Former Pirates backup Aroldis Chapman signs with Boston

According to multiple news reports, hard-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman signed with the Boston Red Sox.

Chapman, who joined the Pittsburgh Pirates on a one-year deal in 2024, appeared to confirm the news by posting on the social media platform X in a Red Sox cap.

According to ESPN, Chapman’s contract with Boston is for one year and is worth $10.75 million, pending the results of a physical exam.

He earned $10.5 million with the Pirates.

Chapman was a key player in the Pirates’ bullpen last season, going 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA over 68 games and 61 2/3 innings.

The seven-time All-Star, who turns 37 in February, was used primarily as a back-end reliever for Pittsburgh, at times setting up for David Bednar, but also taking on the role of closer himself and making 14 saves.

Chapman’s 335 career saves rank 16th in MLB history and third among all active players.

Over the summer, Chapman recorded his 1,197th. strikeout in his career, passing Billy Wagner as a left-handed reliever.

Last year with the Pirates was Chapman’s 15th in the major leagues, and on several occasions he demonstrated the arm strength that has defined his career, hitting 104.7 mph with his sinker.
