Republicans denounce 10 days before Trump’s inauguration as a ‘joke’

Republicans criticized President-elect Trump’s conviction Friday, calling it a “disgrace.”

Trump was sentenced to unconditional release Friday morning in New York City. He was convicted last year of falsifying business records after a years-long investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“What a joke and a disgrace,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., wrote on X.

“This witch hunt and verdict was an insult to the American people,” she added.

Rep. Rudy Yakym, R-Ind., also weighed in on the conviction, writing: “Today’s sentencing is an unfortunate reminder that Democrats will stop at nothing, including weaponizing the justice system, to try to impeach President Trump destroy. Rest assured, they failed and will continue to fail.”

Despite Trump’s attempts to delay the sentencing, it moved forward just ten days before his inauguration.

The new president took part in the proceedings virtually. “After careful analysis, this court concluded that the only lawful judgment that allows the entry of a judgment of conviction is an unconditional discharge,” said Judge Juan Merchan. “At this time, I impose this sentence on all 34 counts.”

“Today’s sentencing of President Trump confirms what the American people have always known: these trials were purely political persecution. The American people overwhelmingly rejected armed justice and politicized justice. This ends Jan. 20,” Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., said on X.

The unconditional discharge that Merchan sentenced Trump to does not impose any punishment on the convicted person. It is contended that the conviction stands. However, this means that corresponding penalties will not be imposed.

While Trump will not face these penalties as a result of the verdict, he could still face obstacles due to his status as a felon as long as the conviction is upheld.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, a top Trump ally, reacted to the news by saying, “Finally, this baseless charade of liberal activists in NYC is over. It’s worth remembering: President Trump doesn’t have to do this job – he’s doing it.” We look forward to saving America.

Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., criticized the conviction and sentence as “a pathetic waste of taxpayer dollars that should be used on the real crimes that are harming New Yorkers.”
