2. Dicker’s fair catch kick ignites Bolts

Morgan Fox probably reacted the same way you did.

“Everyone on the sidelines was asking the same question: What the hell are we doing?,” Fox said.

Of course it was a fair catch-kick! If you need a refresher on what exactly the piece is, Click here.

But everyone agreed that Dicker’s 57-yard kick undoubtedly changed the course of the game for the Bolts.

“He shot us forward,” Henley said. “That’s really how I felt… the feeling, the electricity – we didn’t even win after that kick – but as it got to halftime… everything worked out from there.”

Herbert added: “For Cam to go out there and make a kick like that was a huge boost for us.”

The fair catch-kick rule is strange. And rare too, as the league hadn’t seen one like this since 2019.

But the Chargers — led by special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken and assistant special teams coach Chris “Beep” Gould — were more than ready.

“’Beep’ just ran over and let me know,” Dicker said. “He says, ‘We’re leaving. We kick.’ I thought, ‘Perfect,'” Dicker explained. “Then it was funny looking to their sideline, they were confused about what was going on. We talk about it every week, so it was a normal thing for us.”

He later added: “Fuck beep, we talk about it in our Friday meetings. We’re going through this, we’re going through all the scenarios that can happen.”

Harbaugh called Ficken a “situational sensei” for preparing the Bolts. Not that the Chargers head coach was confused.

Harbaugh actually attempted the kick in 2013 when he was with the 49ers, but Phil Dawson missed a 71-yard attempt.

“That’s my favorite rule in football,” Harbaugh said. “I just tried to get one of those every game. It’s the first one we’ve done.”

“I tried the 49ers. I wanted it so badly that I tried a 71-yarder,” Harbaugh added. “(Cam) got it done and I thought things would pick up by halftime.”

Dicker’s 57-yard mark was the longest in NFL history when it comes to a fair catch.

“To me, it’s the same as a regular field goal,” Dicker said. “You just don’t have any surgeries, so you just go out there and just roll.”

Long snapper Josh Harris, a veteran of 205 career games, was not on the field for the 3-point play.

“It’s really rare,” Harris said. “But we were ready to go and Fick and Beep trained us well. The guys were ready and great for Cam to go out there and execute.”

“If you like, you get points there when you didn’t really expect it. It was a piece of the puzzle that came together tonight,” Harris added. “Incredible collective effort to achieve victory.”

Harbaugh said he gave little thought to attempting a 47-yard Hail Mary on the untimed down at the end of the first half.

“The other option was a Hail Mary, but we have Cameron Dicker,” Harbaugh said.

Mack added: “I saw Dicker compete, I knew it was going to be good.”
