Review: The Bruins fight back and beat the Flyers 4-3 in OT

Pavel Zacha scored on a one-time shot from David Pastrnak to give the Boston Bruins a comeback victory, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden.

The game winner came moments earlier thanks to a great stop from Jeremy Swayman at the other end on Joel Farabee’s heels.

“The game comes down to winning your share of battles,” interim head coach Joe Sacco said of Zacha’s battle in the corner and Pastrnak staying strong on the puck and putting pressure on him, which led to the goal.

After a two-goal deficit at the start of the third period, the Bruins pushed through overtime.

“It’s a sign of the team hanging in there,” Sacco said of the Bruins’ willingness to not give up in the third period. “There will be times in the games where there are ups and downs… You just have to stick to your process, stick to the game plan and believe in it.” It was a good sign again for us tonight. We had some problems at home in the third period.”

The Bruins trailed 2-0 after the first as the Flyers capitalized on a power play and a defensive collapse. Matvei Michkov scored both goals.

Trent Frederic erased the deficit and brought the Bruins to within one point on the power play with a net presence.

But the Flyers regained a two-goal lead when defenseman Cam York pressed down unmanned and fired a wrist shot past Swayman.

Frederic scored his second goal of the evening at the start of the third period. Brad Marchand finally tied the game with a breakaway in the third period.

The Bruins had three power play chances in the third period, two before Marchand’s goal and one after, to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize on any of the man advantages.

In overtime, Pastrnak and Zacha worked their magic for the second time in three games, giving the Bruins their fourth straight win.

Here are the highlights!

First period:

Just 11 seconds into their man advantage, Matvei Michkov sent a one-timer past Swayman’s glove and the post at 7:24 of the first period. 1:0 Flyers.

Travis Sanheim made a pass to Michkov at the back door, where he was left alone to fire a quick shot past Swayman for his second goal of the game at 18:24 of the first period. 2:0 Flyers.

Second period:

The Bruins scored on the power play. Mason Lohrei shot into the net. In the slot, Trent Frederic picked up the rebound and fired a backhand shot past Aleksei Kolosov at 5:26 of the second period. 2:1 game.

Travis Sanheim saw Cam York slide into the high position at 15:29 of the second period, where he skimmed Swayman’s glove with a wrist shot. 3-1 Flyers.

Third period:

Charlie Coyle sent a pass into the slot that Frederic picked up and played through Kolosov’s five-hole at 5:18 of the third period. 3:2 game.

Justin Brazeau sent a long pass up the ice to send Brad Marchand on a breakaway and beat Kolosov by five, tying the game at 14:38 of the third period. 3-3 game.

Over time:

After Pavel Zacha won a battle at the corner, David Pastrnak picked up the loose puck, wrapped it around the net and made a pass to Zacha deep in the right circle, who guided it past Kolosov’s glove for a one-timer. Final result: 4-3 Bruins.

Game notes

  • While the win was far from perfect, it was a good, resilient win that the Bruins needed before embarking on this road trip. The Bruins found a way to fight back in the third period, something they’ve been doing more consistently lately. They outscored the Flyers 12-6 in the third period alone. Swayman said he believes the “faith factor” with this team right now is night and day to feel like they can come from behind and get a win.
  • “It was an outstanding team win that didn’t let adversity deter them,” said Swayman. Swayman said after the game that while it was great to get points in this final stretch of the game, he knows the team did it even though they didn’t play their best hockey. “We still have more to give,” he said. “It’s good to get results, but we know what we have to do to achieve more.”
  • In the last 11 games, Pastrnak has only scored one goal. But in that span, he had nine assists, including the two OT assists on Zacha’s goals. After the game, Sacco said he could see Pastrnak’s determination to make a difference in games, especially in the third period.
  • Sacco returned to the original lines during the game. He said he felt the top lines weren’t working, so Brazeau moved back with Marchand and Elias Lindholm and Pastrnak was back with his line.
  • The Coyle, Frederic and Mark Kastelic series really attacked the net this afternoon. Frederic’s great position heading to the front of the net where he should allow him to be effective and make the difference. Sacco talked about how persistent he was with the puck.
  • The Bruins will go 7-2-0 on the road since Sacco took over. The journey begins on Tuesday when the B’s take on the Winnepeg Jets at 8:00 p.m. ET.
