Russell Wilson: I can’t allow those two negative plays

The Steelers appeared to be on their way to the lead in the second quarter of Saturday’s game in Baltimore when quarterback Russell Wilson broke free for a long run inside the Ravens’ 5-yard line, but Wilson didn’t make it to the end zone and the Steelers wouldn’t get another chance for points on the drive.

Ravens safety Ar’Darius Washington picked off Wilson and the quarterback lost a fumble, allowing the home team a 96-yard touchdown drive. That ended a 7-7 draw and Wilson called the play “unacceptable” when speaking to reporters after the game.

The Steelers rallied in the second half to tie the game 17-17, and an interception by Minkah Fitzpatrick gave them a chance to tie the game again in the fourth quarter, but Wilson made another mistake. A pass to tight end MyCole Pruitt was intercepted by Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey for a 37-yard touchdown, all but sealing the 34-17 win for Baltimore.

“We kind of responded really well. We even had a chance late in the game,” Wilson said, via the team’s website. “The interception hurt us. That’s it really two negative games. They made two crucial plays against us and I can’t allow that. I think that changed the game when they got that interception. I thought the defense did a good job getting the ball back. But they made a play.”

The loss dealt a blow to the Steelers’ AFC North hopes that they will have to shake off quickly, with a game against the Chiefs coming up on Wednesday. Wilson said he “won’t hang his head” about his mistakes Saturday, but the two-game stretch could prove too much for the Steelers’ division title hopes.
