Saints’ Derek Carr ‘week to week’ with hand injury and concussion

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr will be considered week-to-week after injuring his non-throwing hand and suffering a concussion on Sunday, interim coach Darren Rizzi said Monday.

“As it stands right now, I don’t think it will be an IR situation,” Rizzi said. “…We’re going to take it one day at a time this week with the injury in mind.”

Rizzi said the “left hand/wrist” injury, which was feared to be a fracture after initial tests on Sunday, did not appear to require surgery, although Carr did require a second one will seek opinion. Rizzi would not confirm whether there was a break.

“If this was a surgical procedure we would have a different conversation, which is why this will remain a daily, weekly matter. But it’s been done before. … So that’s why we’ll discuss the options and see where we stand.”

Rizzi said Carr was sore on Monday and the team will monitor the swelling in his hand this week.

The team had not yet decided who would start against the Washington Commanders in the event of Carr’s exit, but Rizzi said he would meet with the offensive staff if necessary to make that decision. He said whoever gets the nod would get the most snaps in practice this week.

The Saints started rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler for three games when Carr was sidelined with an oblique injury earlier this season, but that was a decision by then-coach Dennis Allen, who was fired early in the season.

“We need to make a decision on this sooner rather than later. … The number of reps will be important,” Rizzi said.

Rizzi said he felt both Rattler and Jake Haener had performed well this season, but reiterated that he wouldn’t rule Carr out – even if he wasn’t able to practice during the week.

“We have to figure out which guy gives us the best chance to win,” Rizzi said. “I feel strong both ways, but I really feel like both guys give us a chance.”
