New Orleans Saints utility player Taysom Hill was carted off the field during Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams with an apparent knee injury.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter as the Saints sought a late surge. Hill ran a sweep in Rams territory with a direct snap on fourth-and-1. When cornerback Cobie Durant tackled him, he made direct contact with his left knee.

Hill’s knee bent the wrong way and he rolled to the ground in obvious pain after taking first down on a 2-yard run.

Eventually he was carried off the field in the back of a cart, greeting the SuperDome crowd who chanted his name as he left the field.

Hill did not return to the game. The Saints announced that he had a knee injury, but no further details about the injury were immediately available.

The Saints drove the drive to the Rams’ 9-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert on fourth-and-3. The Rams then ran out of time to claim their victory.

An eighth-year NFL veteran, Hill played his first career in New Orleans, where he became a fan favorite as a pass-catching tight end, part-time quarterback and utility runner. In eight games this season, Hill recorded 278 rushing yards, 23 catches for 187 yards and six total touchdowns.

The Saints fell to 4-8 with Sunday’s loss. The Rams improved to 6-6.
