What happened: Wednesday’s outage affected both free and premium users, including companies that rely on OpenAI’s API.

The monitoring site DownDetector.com had recorded around 30,000 outage reports in the USA

According to OpenAI, the problem was identified in the API, Soraand ChatGPT, and efforts are underway to restore normal operations.

At 8:00 p.m. ETC, OpenAI updated the message: “We have identified a path to recovery and are beginning to see some traffic return successfully.” We continue to work to return service to normal.”

However, at the time of writing, the issues persist and an estimated resolution time has not yet been provided.

Why it matters: The outage comes at a critical time for OpenAI as the company conducts its “12 Days of OpenAI” event, which began on December 5th.

OpenAI has already introduced a new subscription tier, ChatGPT Propriced at $200 per month, and Sora, an AI-powered video generation tool, among others.

The ChatGPT Pro offers unlimited access to all models, including the advanced reasoning model “o1”.
