Sammy Sosa, Cubs issue statements with slugger’s apology, team invite

Sammy Sosa and the Cubs have had a complicated relationship in recent years.

It appears that Bond is on the mend.

The former Cubs slugger apologized to the organization listed below on Thursday.

SAMMY SOSA:

I left everything on the field for the Cubs and the Cubs fans because I wanted to win and make the fans happy.

I loved seeing the fans at Wrigley in the Right Field Bleachers at every home game.

I understand why some players of my era don’t always get the recognition our stats deserve.

There were times when I did everything I could to recover from injuries and maintain my strength for 162 games. I have never broken any laws, but in hindsight I have made mistakes and | to apologize.

We did great things as a team and I worked extremely hard in the batting cage to become a great hitter.

The Cubs fans are the best in the world, and I hope the fans, the Cubs and I can all get back together and move on.

We can’t change the past, but the future is bright. I’ve always been a Cub at heart and I can’t wait to see Cubs fans again.

Sincerely,

Sammy Sosa

Sosa spent 13 years with the Cubs, hitting 545 home runs, winning 7 All-Star Game appearances, 6 Silver Slugger Awards and the 1998 NL MVP Award.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts issued a response (see below).

STATEMENT BY TOM RICKETTS:

We thank Sammy for publishing his statement and for contacting us. Nobody played harder or wanted to win more. No one is perfect, but we never doubted his passion for the game and the Cubs.

To say Sammy is a fan favorite is an understatement. We plan to invite him to the 2025 Cubs Convention and hope he can attend, even if it is on short notice. We are all ready to move forward together.

It’s been years since we’ve seen Sosa again at Wrigley Field or the Cubs Convention.

The Cubs Convention will take place January 17-19 at the Sheraton in Chicago.
