San Diego Airport experiences flight delays amid holiday travel rush – NBC 7 San Diego

San Diego International Airport is experiencing flight delays due to fog on Friday as the holiday travel season begins.

According to FlightAware, as of 11:45 a.m. there were a total of 292 delays and 37 cancellations.

A dense fog warning was in effect for coastal communities early Friday, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less, impacting travel.

According to AAA, 119 million Americans will travel this holiday season. The San Diego airport is expecting passenger traffic of 1.3 million people over an 18-day period that began Thursday and runs through the Sunday after New Year’s Day. According to the airport, this represents an increase of around 4 to 5% compared to the previous year.

According to the airport, around 80,000 people will pass through the airport during this period. Mornings and evenings are the busiest times, so travelers are advised to avoid these periods if possible.

There was traffic congestion on westbound North Harbor Drive on Thursday. The airport advised travelers to allow extra time on the way to the airport.

San Diego International Airport has the following tips to help make this holiday travel season run smoothly:

  • Reserve parking spaces in advance
  • The streets around SAN are changing. Due to the construction work, the airport is reminding drivers to pay attention to road signs
  • Pack wisely and avoid bringing prohibited items in your hand luggage
  • Check your flight status before coming to the airport and arrive early
  • A free electric shuttle bus runs between the Old Town Transit Station and SAN. The electric shuttle buses run seven days a week, with an average arrival time of every 20 to 30 minutes. The first pickup is at 4:45 a.m. and the last pickup/drop-off is at 12:30 p.m
  • Get dropped off or take a ride
