San Francisco mayoral inauguration nabs EDM artist Zhu

San Francisco-born, Grammy-nominated electronic musician Zhu (pronounced “zoo”) will perform at Chinatown’s one-of-a-kind night market on Wednesday to commemorate the inauguration of Daniel Lurie, the mayor-elect’s team announced Monday.

The DJ and singer with a deep house style rose to prominence in 2014 with the melodic, mournful “Faded,” which received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.

Zhu also appeared at Outside Lands in 2021 in a Halloween performance that received widespread acclaim for its imaginative visual elements. Lurie is particularly a big fan of electronic music and visits Outside Lands regularly.

Wednesday’s party will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Grant Avenue between Sacramento and Jackson streets in the heart of Chinatown and will feature an opening performance by DJ Ruckus. The evening is a unique offshoot of the seasonal night market series that began in 2023 and regularly attracted tens of thousands of revelers to the neighborhood last year to enjoy dumplings, lion dances and dragon beard candies.

Co-hosted by Lurie’s inaugural committee and BeChinatown, it aims to highlight the importance of nightlife to the city’s cultural renaissance and honor the electoral influence of Asian American voters who fueled Lurie’s victory in November.
