Santa Ana winds and extremely low humidity created a dangerous weather mix in Southern California, sparking wildfires and forcing SDG&E to cut power to tens of thousands of customers.

More than 50,000 SDG&E customers were without power Tuesday morning, and as many as 115,800 of them face the possibility of having service interrupted to prevent Santa Ana winds from destroying power lines and sparking wildfires.

NBC 7 meteorologists said it was one of the strongest wind events in Santa Ana in recent years. Gusts combined with a relative humidity of less than 10% mean sparks could spread quickly from any wildfire.

According to the National Weather Service, the inland mountains and valleys of San Diego County are under a Red Flag Warning issued for critical fire danger until 4 a.m. Wednesday.
