Saquon Barkley breaks Eagles’ single-season rushing record – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Saquon Barkley passed LeSean McCoy on Sunday and now holds the Eagles’ franchise record for rushing yards in a season.

And he did it in 13 games.

Today, Barkley needed 109 rushing yards to surpass Shady’s record, and he did so in the fourth quarter against the Panthers.

Barkley knew he was closing in on the record.

“I’m certainly aware of it,” Barkley said this week. “That’s something, when I got here I looked at the history of the Eagles running backs. I didn’t know Wilbert Montgomery. I didn’t know him, so I actually got to do a dive with him and learn more about him and (Brian) Westbrook and Shady. That is your goal. They want to come here and leave a legacy in a place, in a franchise.

“I had the same attitude when I was in New York. Unfortunately, that fell short. I’m aware of this, but it’s not a driving factor. The driving factor is to win football games and put ourselves in a position to win everything. I am aware of the things I can achieve. But I achieve that by sticking to the script.”

The 27-year-old Barkley has now rushed for more than 100 yards in 9 of 13 games this season, including four straight games.

This week, McCoy told NBC Sports Philadelphia that he is rooting for Barkley to break his record.

“Yeah, man, records are meant to be broken,” McCoy told NBC Sports Philadelphia this week. “And it’s a tribute to the respect we have for each other. I love competitors, man. I love what he does for my team.

“The cool thing is when he broke my single-game rushing record, I was in the building watching the game with Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie. That was kind of cool. If you saw the microphone, he said, “We broke the record, we broke Shady’s record.” We compete. I love people who advance the position, so I’m all for it.”
