Saturday, December 21st is the winter solstice. It is the shortest day of the year and the start of the coldest season. The good news is that if you start on the longest night of the year, the days automatically get longer, and a little more sun slowly returns until our longest day in June.

Winter will last until the spring equinox on March 20, 2025.

Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March every year and lasts until November. Proponents say it reduces energy costs and adds more productive daylight hours to the calendar. However, some health experts say that switching twice a year puts a strain on our bodies.

“Spring Forward” is scheduled for Sunday, March 9, 2025. After an hour of sleep loss, people experience a later sunrise and sunset until fall. The return to standard time, or “fallback,” is scheduled for Sunday, November 2nd.

But will there be daylight saving time this year? President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to abolish it. The timeline for when and if that might happen is unclear.

What did Trump say about Daylight Saving Time?

“The Republican Party will do its best to abolish Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but powerful constituency, but it shouldn’t!” he posted on his social media page Truth Social. “Daylight saving time is inconvenient and very costly to our nation.”

The GOP holds majorities in the House and Senate, and daylight saving time changes must be passed by Congress.

An attempt to use only daylight saving time in 1974 failed because parents feared that children would leave for school before dawn, which would lead to more car accidents.
