World number one Scottie Scheffler will miss the PGA Tour’s season-opening event in Hawaii after injuring his hand while preparing Christmas dinner, the player’s manager said Friday.

The injury prevents Scheffler from competing at The Sentry on January 2nd, but he hopes to appear at The American Express in La Quinta, California on January 16th.

“On Christmas Day, while preparing dinner, Scottie suffered a stab wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager Blake Smith said in a statement Friday.

“Small pieces of glass were left in the palm of my hand, which required surgery. He was told he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he has to retire from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express,” he added.

Scheffler is coming off one of the most successful seasons in PGA Tour history, winning seven tournaments on the tour – the first player to achieve that tally since Tiger Woods in 2007.

Last month, he was named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Scheffler won his second Masters Green Jacket this year, gold at the Paris Olympics, the Tour Championship and the PGA Tour season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs, and the Players Championship.

He finished last season with a win at the unofficial Hero World Challenge Invitational, giving him nine wins in all competitions for the year.
