Snow in Dallas

Wednesday will be mostly dry, with highs in the lower 40s. However, a mix of snow, sleet and rain is forecast throughout the day on Thursday. Northern areas are more likely to get snow, while southern areas will mostly experience rain.

After sunset Thursday, the wintry mix will then transition to snow, with heavier snowfall expected north and northeast of Dallas. Snowfall forecasts are 1 to 3 inches in the DFW area and 3 to 6 inches in the northern and northeastern parts of the metroplex.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the winter storm warning to a winter storm warning through Friday for most of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

How schools decide when to close

Most schools across the metroplex, including Dallas and Fort Worth ISD, have already announced cancellations for Thursday and Friday.

DISD employs more than 20,000 people.

Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde says she and other North Texas superintendents made a joint decision Wednesday to cancel classes for the rest of the week.

“They may be employees of Dallas ISD, but they may live in a neighboring school district. So when we are closed and they are open or vice versa, that creates some challenges for our entire community,” she said. “No matter what we decide, someone will think there is a better decision. We will always shine on the side that everyone is safe.”

Dallas ISD weighed factors including building infrastructure, such as the possibility of pipe leaks, as well as sidewalk safety and road conditions.

“If there is any kind of ice, we all know it is extremely dangerous,” Elizalde said. “No matter how prepared we are, we don’t want our drivers to have to deal with this.”

School leaders also keep in mind that when the streets are safe, they must prioritize children in the classroom – both from an educational perspective and so as not to interfere with parents’ work schedules.

“We need our students in class. We need them in school where we know they are learning and growing,” said Richardson ISD Superintendent Tabitha Branum. “However, when we know that bad weather is possible, safety must be taken into account. We want to ensure that our students, our staff, our community and our families get to and from school safely.”

Some school districts are waiting until Thursday to make a decision about school on Friday.
