School closings in West Michigan for Thursday, December 12th

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Over a hundred schools across West Michigan will be closed Thursday, Dec. 12, as heavy snow, high winds and poor visibility create dangerous road conditions.

The storm system moved in on Wednesday afternoon. There are currently below freezing wind chills across the region and wind gusts of 30 miles per hour are expected.

Several schools began canceling early Wednesday evening as conditions worsened. Schools in Kent, Kalamazoo, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Barry and Van Buren counties, among others, are announcing closures.

School districts closed include Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Kentwood, Forest Hills, Hudsonville, Holland, Rockford, Portage, Muskegon, West Ottawa, Zeeland, East Grand Rapids, North Muskegon, Wyoming, Grandville, Caledonia, Grand Haven, Mona Shores, Northview , Kenowa Hills, Spring Lake, Oakridge, Fruitport, Jenison and Cedar Springs.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service warned that poor travel conditions will continue as lake effects and blowing snow will continue. Weather conditions are expected to improve on Thursday evening.

Some other closed school districts and charters include Ravenna, Hastings, Allegan, Black River Public Schools, Byron Center, West Michigan Aviation Academy, Gull Lake, Allendale, Lowell, West Catholic High School, Kelloggsville, Godwin Heights, Coopersville, Gull Lake, Hamilton, Eagle Crest Charter Academy, Whitehall, William C. Abney Academy.

A winter weather advisory is in effect west of US 131 until 7 p.m.
