PHILADELPHIA – It stood to reason that if Saquon Barkley wanted to break LeSean McCoy’s Eagles record for rushing yards in a season, he might have to do it before the fourth quarter.

That’s because Eagles coach Nick Sirianni would like to give his starters a break in the fourth quarter if the Eagles had a big lead.

But Barkley and the Eagles had to play the fourth quarter to the bitter end. That’s because they had to get a 22-16 win.

Barkley, who had 1,499 rushing yards this season, had 124 yards, breaking McCoy’s record of 1,607 yards entering the fourth quarter.

It was a battle throughout. The Eagles needed to score with 14 seconds left in the first half to take a 14-10 lead. Barkley rushed for 49 yards in the first half, 60 yards shy of the record.

Saquon Barkley set the record early in the fourth quarter with a 9-yard run up the middle from the Eagles’ 39.

The fans chanted “MVP! MVP! MVP!” as Barkley passed for well over 1,607 yards that season.

Saquon Barkley sets a record but is two away from it; The Eagles take the lead

Barkley approached the record with runs of 11 and 15 yards early in the drive, leaving him 4 yards shy of the record. But Barkley only managed one more carry and gained 2 yards. Grant Calcaterra’s 4-yard TD gave the Eagles a 22-16 lead following the 2-point conversion with 13:45 left in the fourth quarter.

But Barkley set a record on the trip. He passed for more than 100 yards for the ninth time this season, breaking Wilbert Montgomery’s record of 8 yards set in 1980.

Barkley has 107 yards on 16 carries.

Jake Elliott’s FG struggles continue; The Panthers lead 16:14

The Eagles opened the second half with a strong performance, mostly behind Barkley. That is, until they faltered when Hurts was attacked on 3rd and 4th for no gain. But Jake Elliott missed the ball from 52 yards. He is 0-for-5 from 50 yards and beyond this season.

The Panthers then drove down the field and scored, regaining the lead on Chuba Hubbard’s 1-yard TD. But Eddie Piniero missed the extra point, making Carolina’s lead 16-14.
