Scott Boras does Juan Soto admirers a big favor with a stunning change of pace

Blake Snell signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, further embarrassing the World Series champions for being rich. Snell is a client of Scott Boras, which is particularly relevant this offseason.

Just last winter, Snell was forced to sign a lucrative tryout contract with the San Francisco Giants due to Boras’ overdraft on the free agent market. The same goes for Jordan Montgomery, who eventually fired Boras as his agent after signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

But perhaps Boras learned a thing or two last winter. He doesn’t control the market – the market controls him. This is good news for Juan Soto’s admirers. Soto is expected to earn $600 million on a long-term contract and he wants to sign before the end of the MLB winter meetings. Given that his agent was Boras, many baseball experts were skeptical that Soto would meet that deadline. However, Soto is expected to receive offers soon (if he hasn’t already, depending on who you believe).

The teams with a realistic chance of getting Soto are the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Blue Jays. One could argue that all four of these teams would have pursued Snell even if he hadn’t been in such a rush to sign. It’s hard to blame Snell after the travesty he endured last winter, but Boras should know better.

By accepting the Dodgers’ offer, Snell not only added a valuable contributor to a superteam, but also potentially left some money on the table. However, it’s hard to scoff at the perks Snell received from Los Angeles, a team that desperately needs rotation help despite winning a World Series.

Snell, like many of the top talents the Dodgers have signed over the last two winters, signed a contract that includes deferred funds. It would be a surprise if Soto took a similar path, which could well eliminate Los Angeles from the running for his services – even though they would have been a dark horse anyway.

If anything, Boras did the four top candidates for Soto a huge favor by committing to his early signing schedule and committing a ton of money to the Dodgers’ payroll.
