Scott Laughton and Aleksei Kolosov lead the way in victory – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Scott Laughton and Aleksei Kolosov led the Flyers to a 4-1 victory over the Red Wings on Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Laughton scored all four goals and Kolosov was strong in net.

The Flyers (14-12-4) won their second straight and have scored at least a point in 13 of their last 17 games (10-4-3).

John Tortorella’s club was able to build on one of its best performances of the season, a 5-3 victory Tuesday night over the Blue Jackets.

After Detroit cut the Flyers’ lead to 2-1, Laughton scored an empty-net goal to secure a hat trick. He added a second blank shot for good measure. The 30-year-old became the first Flyer to score four goals in a game since John LeClair in October 2002.

“Really happy for him,” Sean Couturier said. “He’s probably one of the best teammates you can have.”

Laughton is a popular flyer who has been with the organization since 2012. After the game, he received a long standing ovation from his teammates in the locker room.

“It was pretty electric in here,” Laughton said. “We are a close group and celebrate the victories. It’s definitely a good feeling tonight. Hopefully I’ll get my game going offensively. It was a great evening.”

Similar to the Flyers, the Red Wings (11-14-4) have played many close games, with 10 of their last 12 decided by a goal. The Flyers visit Detroit in six days for the second of three meetings between the clubs.

Scott Laughton started Thursday night with three goals for the season and finished the game with seven.

• Kolosov stopped 25 of 26 shots.

The 22-year-old was sharp and the Flyers helped his cause by dictating the second period heavily. Kolosov looked like his athletic self and flashed his glove several times.

“To take advantage of the scoring opportunities he had in the second half of the third period and how he stood there,” Tortorella said. “He was really good.”

The Red Wings were able to overtake him with 3:53 minutes left in the game.

Coming into the game, Kolosov was 3-1-1 with a 2.58 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in his last five appearances.

“You can tell he’s a player, he fights hard, he fights for a lot of pucks,” Couturier said. “He’s really athletic and never gives up on pucks.”

Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot was outstanding, stopping 32 of the Flyers’ 34 shots.

Before Laughton broke him with a breakaway windup and blast in the second period, Talbot had just made three outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless. He robbed Matvei Michkov with a glove stop. Then he stopped a 2-on-1 by Joel Farabee and a breakaway by Couturier in a 16-second span.

So Laughton fired a slap shot.

“Coots missed a breakaway, a 2-on-1 beezer; I think Laughts said, ‘To hell with it, I’m just going to drive this thing,'” Tortorella said. “And that’s what he did. For a Scotty Laughton, you always hope good things happen to him. He worked so hard. That’s good and of course it’s an important reason why we win the game.”

Scott Laughton fired a rocket in the second period against the Red Wings on Thursday night, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

By the second intermission, the Flyers had fired 30 shots on Talbot.

Laughton struck again in the third period. He scored his NHL-leading shorthanded 17th since the 2022-23 season with a goal off a pass from Travis Konecny. The two form a dangerous duo in the penalty shootout.

“Scotty is one of those guys that it doesn’t matter where he’s in the lineup or what his job is, he’s always a good spirit at the rink,” Konecny said. “He never complains about anything, he just puts his head down and does what he has to do. I think when he’s called upon on offense, he has a lot of skill.”

The Flyers went on the PK right after the opening draw of the third period. Michkov received a roughing penalty after getting into trouble with Alex DeBrincat. It is becoming increasingly clear that Michkov plays with a certain hardness.

• Michkov had his season-best streak of five points, which he scored in five games. The 20-year-old winger scored three goals and seven assists along the way.

With a delayed penalty from the Red Wings in the second period, Michkov almost made it to “Michigan”. He attempted to score the lacrosse-style goal from behind the net, but Talbot slipped in time to save the ball.

On Thursday evening, Michkov didn’t score a point for the first time since November 29th. He started as a points-per-game player with 11 goals and 16 assists in 27 games.

Ashlyn Sullivan caught up with Matvei Michkov before the Flyers took on the Red Wings on Thursday night.

• Emil Andrae was a healthy substitute as Egor Zamula came into the lineup and played alongside Rasmus Ristolainen.

The 22-year-old Andrae has strengthened the Flyers’ defense. But in the last two games he was minus-3 and took a big hit.

“I think Andrae fought it,” Tortorella said on Morning Skate. “It was a little battle with the puck, it was a battle without the puck. We have to be careful when we develop a guy like that, he comes in here like a gangster.”

• The Flyers practice at noon ET on Friday before flying to St. Paul, Minn., for Saturday’s matchup against the Wild (2 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
