Scott Laughton sets the Flyers record with four game-winning goals

PHILADELPHIA – Flyers center Scott Laughton was very proud as he scored his second goal of the game to score his 100 career points.

Laughton had another major milestone in sight: He added two empty-net goals in Thursday night’s 4-1 win over Detroit, tying Philadelphia’s team record of four goals in a game.

“Hopefully I get my game going somehow,” Laughton said. “It was a great night.”

After scoring just once in his last 25 games, Laughton scored his second career hat trick and became the first Flyers player to score four goals since John LeClair in 2002.

He is the 10th Flyers player to score four goals in a game, and it is the 17th time a player has scored four goals.

“For Scotty Laughton, you always hope good things happen to him,” coach John Tortorella said. “He works so hard. He’s the reason we won the game.”

Laughton was greeted with a standing ovation by his teammates in the locker room, who then ran over him in celebration. They then presented him with a pro wrestling championship belt with the Flyers logo.

The 30-year-old Laughton, who made his NHL debut with the Flyers in January 2013, scored the first two goals the hard way.

He opened the scoring in the second period with a breakaway goal after a slap shot from the left circle. He added a shorthanded goal in the third period, deflecting a pass from Travis Konecny as it crashed into the goal crease.

Laughton has been a staple with the Flyers for more than a decade, but never scored more than 18 goals in a season. He scored just three goals this season for a Flyers team that appears poised to finally emerge from a lengthy rebuild and compete for its first playoff spot since 2020.

His first trick was on February 7, 2021 against Washington.

“I don’t think you really see 100 goals, but I’ve been in the league for a long time and it’s hard to score goals in this league,” Laughton said. “Scoring 100 points is pretty cool for me, something very special. I know it’s not much compared to some others, but it feels pretty cool to achieve this.”

His last two goals came in the final 70 seconds of the empty-net game.

“It’s pretty cool,” Laughton said. “Two short sellers, but I know they all count.”
