Scottie Scheffler was sidelined with a wound to his right palm

The world’s No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, suffered a stab wound to his right palm from broken glass while preparing dinner on Christmas Day and had to undergo surgery to remove broken glass, the PGA Tour announced Friday.

Scheffler, who is the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year after seven wins in 2024, will be sidelined for three to four weeks. He has withdrawn from the opening game of the 2025 season, The Sentry, which will take place January 2-5 in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Scheffler hopes to return to action Jan. 16-19 at the American Express in La Quinta, California.

“Small fragments of glass remained in the palm of the hand, requiring surgery,” Scheffler’s manager Blake Smith said in a statement. “He was told he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately he has to retire from The Sentry.”

Scheffler is coming off one of the best seasons in PGA Tour history. His seven victories on tour were the most since Tiger Woods in 2007, and he won a second green jacket at the Masters, a gold medal at the Paris Olympics and a FedEx Cup title.

The 28-year-old became the first golfer since Woods (2005-07) to win the Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA Tour Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons.

On December 8, Scheffler won his second consecutive title at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial tournament hosted by Woods in the Bahamas, giving Scheffler nine wins worldwide this year.
